The Nigerian Military, Everything you need to know and how to join them

The largest component of the Nigerian armed forces is the Nigerian Army(NA). Any land warfare operation is handled by the Nigerian army. This force is governed by the Nigerian ArmyCouncil (NAC).

The Nigerian Army was called the Royal West African Frontier Force before it was created in 1960. The Nigerian military is not meant for everyone, you must meet some certain requirements and qualification before you can apply to join the Nigeria army. Hence, let us consider how you can join the Nigerian military.

How to join the Army

If you are a Nigerian graduate and you are interested to join the Nigerian armed forces, please ensure to visit their official website @ www.nigerianarmyms.ng.

An announcement is always made through their portal. So if you are interested in joining in 2019 follow them on their website.

While waiting for the Announcement, you can start preparing for the application process by getting all the requirement and details needed to join the Nigerian armed force.

Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC)

The Direct Short Service Commission DSSC applications are available for both civilian and to those who already serve in Nigerian military before.

It is possible to select your career based on your education (BSc, BA, HND, etc.), thus you can serve as:

  • Army Signals.
  • Medical Corps staff (dental officer, medical consultant, nurse, optometrist, etc.)
  • Intelligence Corps member.
  • Finance Corps

How to  Apply

  1. Visit the Nigerian armed forces website @ nigerianarmyms.ng.
  2. Create your personal account.
  3. Choose DSSC application option and fill out the registration form. You will have to upload the photos of your passport, birth certificate, educational diploma/certificate, state of origin, etc
  4. Once the registration is complete you will see a photo-slip. It is generated automatically by the website. Make sure you print it out. The Court of Law and Military Officer or Government Chairman will have to sign page 1 and 2.
  5. After the application has been summated, wait patiently and checked the portal toward the middle or end of December to see if you have been shortlisted. If you have been selected you will be called upon for an interview. Endeavor to be handy with your printed photo-slip at this stage.

Short Service Combatant Commission (SSC)

The Short Service Combatant Commission (SSC) is also available for both civilians and military personnel.

Any interested person can apply whenever the application is officially announced on their official website. It normally takes place toward October till the end of November.

Let’s consider the requirement any interested citizen must meet:

  • You have to be 23-27 years old.
  • You should be born in Nigeria.
  • You need to meet the medical and physical Nigerian Army standards.
  • Your height has to be 1.65-1.68 meter.
  • You should have at least an HND diploma.

There are also other conditions to meet, but let us consider how to join the Nigerian military Through SSC application:

  1. It is possible to apply online from October till the end of November in 2019. Just follow the news on the ‘nigerianarmyms.ng’ website.
  2. Choose SSC application form and fill it in. You’ll be asked to attach additional documents such as your passport, birth certificate, educational diploma, etc.
  3. Once you submit your application online be sure to print your photo-slip. You’ll see it after completing the form. It will need to be signed by the Court of Law and other organization, so get this done beforehand.
  4. Look out for the short-list candidates and prepare for an interview in case you are selected.
  5. If you finally join the Nigerian Armed Forces through SSC, the service will be granted for fifteen years.
